Previously Story And New Discovery

Check out this SlideShare Presentation:

The rising of density is not always problem, but maybe a chance to raise the quality in culture & action’s layer.
Density could be present in two aspects
1. Density of statistics ( density of bikes’ amount & density of using)
2. Density of space quality, cultures and actions.

The bicycle system takes a lot of city space. That means there is no more urban space to build new lanes or parking place for bicycles, but also shows the potential.
The bicycle system in Malmö can be developed as a diversity space ecosystem which could offer more opportunities for different activities and dynamic of small cultures with the density of functions.

The walk as a method and an artistic practice: A DAV workshop with Publik

By Zlatan Ðikić / Mo, Kuo-Chen / Roberto Ovalle / Teng, Miao

Site: Rosengård, Malmö

We arrived in Rosengård in mid September. We heard it’s a sketchy place where no one should go at night, where there are bombs and guns… in short, “a failed experiment in multiculturalism”

(as stated in http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/556299.aspx).

One cloudy morning, we decided to meet in Rosengård. Mo, Teng and Roberto were staying about 2km away from the center of Rosengård, so we decided to walk and approach the place on foot. Four or five hours later, we left Rosengård.

This DAV project intends to show what we found to be the great potential of visiting and walking in Rosengård: the possible outcome of the mixture of Swedish culture and the cultures of the many immigrants.

We want to show what could be an original Rosengård experience.

Rethink the meaning of “density” in Malmö

Rethink the meaning of “density” in Malmö

After the trip of Paris, I find I have been in a close logic. Density of bicycle system is not only meaning how much bikes could be hold, but maybe how many actions could happen in this system. Comparing with the diversity in Paris’s metro, I will rethink the potential of Malmö’s bicycle system.

Density could be present in two aspects
1. Density of statistics ( density of bikes’ amount & density of using times)
2. Density of space quality, culture and actions.

On the other hand, the rising of density is not always problem, but maybe a chance to raise the quality in culture & action’s layer.
The bicycle system takes a lot of city space, so there is not more space to extend it. But at the same time, it shows possibility to increase the density on two aspects (density of using time& density of actions).
The bicycle system in Malmö may be developed to be a diversity space ecosystem which could offer more opportunities for different other actions when the density of using is rising at the same time.

Density of Bicycle System

Check out this SlideShare Presentation: Density of Bicycle System ( information recollection and point of departure)

A. Expending of city is a process that could not be stopped, but we could not take land form agriculture which feed us. The Ringvagen is a kind of limit for the urban structure.
B. On the other hands the increasing of inhabitants is also a reason of urban density rising.
C. The rising of sea level will affect the coastline and also the using of land. (with 3 meters rise of sea level, 2400hektares land, 140km street, 23km railway, 6km highway will be under the water ——information from Stine Nilsen)

On all accounts, those information show a challenge of urban density rising which including the density rising of bicycle system.
Now, there is no more extra space to build new lanes or parking place for bicycle. How to make the system adapt higher density will be a big question. Rental bicycle maybe a way to think (I also could find some information in government plans).

I always want to compare the situation of China with Malmo. So I search a successful example from Hangzhou (the Capital of Zhejiang Provence) which called the most beautiful city China. This project began form Aug1st 2008. Nowadays, the data of rental bicycle system is 100000 time.person/day (4% of public traffic system). Over 2000 stops and 50000 bikes are working in this system. It shows the potential of rental bicycle.

Paris, stages everywhere for everyone

For me, Paris is a city full of opportunities for artist to make shows. Successful artist or noteless, musician or painter, young or old, pioneer or guard, even just who what to show himself, everyone could find his stages in the city.

The stage could be in metro station, avenue, square, plaza, palace, gallery, museum, even some private space such as balcony belong to a apartment. The quality of space and flexibility of culture offer a kind of diversity for the art ecosystem and also culture living for every staying in Paris.

“Take away show” on La Blogotheque is a very important internet’s stage for young musicians now which diffused from Paris to the whole world. It represent the soul of street artists in Paris——everyone can show.

Flexibility Of Traffic

Check out this SlideShare Presentation:
Flexibility of City Traffic System

We treat city as a biotope, as a kind of metaphone, then the city traffic system is a basic network which maintain the activity of a biotope.

With the expending of city site and population, the cars become the leading actor in this times drama. After the first industry revolution, most ideas of urban planning based on the road system for cars that made the new main road to be wider and wider. Even we never stopped to build our car roads, the traffic jam is always our city nightmare.

The car- dominative system has eaten all the Flexibility of City Traffic System. As the Achilles' Heel of a city, any small arrow might destroyed the brittle huge system such as a normal traffic accident.

What is the new way to find the flexibility of city traffic. Maybe the urban planning of Malmö could offer some good idea which is rebuilding the biodiversity of City Traffic System.

The roads always can’t fit the expending of cars, traffic jam always happen because of different small reasons.
Flexibility of traffic system shows a space to face the change. When one part of this system have problem, others will offer the space to maintain the stress of traffic needing. It offers more choice for people.

Behind Bicycles

Check out this SlideShare Presentation:
Behind bikes (China and Malmö )

Few years ago, China was called “country of bicycles”. In my memory, bicycle is extremely important vehicle for normal people. Even today, bikes are also the main traffic tool for my family. ( We still have tree bikes for normal using).
But nowadays, following the expanding of city and the increasing of economy, instead bikes, more and more people choose other vehicle for private vehicles such as electric bikes, motorcycles and cars.

Malmö is Sweden's third-largest city and one with a bike culture to be proud of.
Using 140 kilometers of cycle paths and good bike infrastructure, about forty percent of Malmö's population chooses the bicycle every day to take themselves to work and studies.

My Question:
1. How the bike system of Malmö is working? How could I map it?

2. Comparing those two situations of bikes in different countries, I try to read the reasons of city urban, economy, culture and nature hiding behind the bikes.

3. Can he return to China with your city as the leading example?

Economy behind bike…………….

I also read some staff about how Malmö was changed from gray industrial city to green sustainable city, especially after 1980s' end (Kockum's closed and thousands of workers were fired).
At the same time, china was going to the super industry gardens. Although the chinese government had found that sustainable plans are very important for the country but they still on initial stages. They have no power to stop people to aspire after a comfortable modern life style as American. Of course, the expanding of city also make it impossible to use bike in traditional way, but some of Malmö’s experience I already found is really interesting on it. I will observe it during the trip.

“Rhizome” In Traditional Chinese Architecture Art And Culture

“Rhizome” in Traditional Chinese Architecture Art and Culture
The author of Rhizome mentioned China as an Orient of rhizomes and immanence. I want to find some tracing of Rhizome in my background culture to help me to understand the thinking of rhizome and also to use it to offer a new angle of my own culture.

1. As an Opposite Side: “Tree” in Traditional Chinese Architecture
Before I talk about rhizome, it is important and necessary to discuss the opposite side of rhizome: tree and root. As tree is a sample of a system established on hierarchical graph, It is easy to find its tracing in a imperial power machine with centers of signifiance and subjectification, and also in the Imperial Palace in Beijing.
I try to making the tree in this palace to show how the political power flowed out of the central apparatus (building) of the empire in thousand years.

2. Interlaced Segments : “Rhizome” in Traditional Chinese Gardens.
Interlaced Segments:
Without the signs of politics and tracing of power, those gardens in Suzhou had never been planned under one uniform purpose even the mind of the owner and architect. They ware assemblages of a group of talents from different craftsmen, interlaced segments learned from nature, traditional culture essence and desiring of backing to nature.
Instead of Grand narrative, those garden more like a series segments which is always changing. Give you a new image of landscape in every seconds when you walk through. There was the beginning(door) for the garden, but endless segments inside. You ware always in the middle.
Buddha told that: No I and no immutability. This thinking effected our culture and the art of garden deeply. It was another describing of multiplicities.

Wasp and Orchid: Nature and Garden
Art in Chinese philosophy des not always imitate nature, but offer a medium between the owner and natural.
As Wasp, those gardens in Suzhou are not just smaller copy of nature, but make the artificial structure to reterritorialize the nature. The purpose of build gardens is not only to present the desire to live out of earthliness, but also try to find a short cut to translate human to a part of nature again, and keep the comfortable and civilized living style at the same time.
They are sedentarities, but built for nomadism.
Through a process of abstraction and reconstruction, the aesthetics of nature come back to city in the status of a substantive.

3. Scroll Painting: “Rhizome” in Traditional Chinese Art
This Scroll Painting described the city living beside the Bian River in Capital of Song dynasty.
We use especial furniture to appreciate it which keeps the scroll steady. You could never see the whole work at the same time, but any part of this work could be an independent image. It was meaning that people could go into this printing from everywhere. It showed multiple entryways and exits and its own lines of flight.
This dominating point for perspective did not exist in this painting, which made it more like a map. Comparing with normal map in a plan, this one included more information from different directions. It is a recording of a rhizome.

I use color point to make the characters on the printing, than I got an antigenealogy image. Every point is a connotative central of a happening. It is detachable, connectable, reversible, and modifiable.

The purpose of this essay is not translating the concept of rhizome with Chinese culture. What I want to do is making use of this tool to understand myself and my culture more deeply. The sample I give out maybe is not the ideal model for rhizome, but is a introduction for this big discussion.

welcome

"Every schoolboy knows"

This is a phrase from the anthropologist Gregory Bateson who you may meet as a reference in our master studio.
This expression can be interpreted in such a way as every architect, every taxi driver, every kid now knows that global challenges has to be met with full innovative force on every local level, including the smallest biotope. Its an awareness in the air. This involves rethinking, research and new kinds of explorations in the urban field, thus conceived as both built up structures and the landscape. The city is under pressure and has to be redefined continuosly.
Yesterday we read and article by the researcher Maria Hellström, SLU/Alnarp/Malmø, titled The deverging common (Den avvikende allmenning) where she discusses Christiania in Copenhagen as representative of the urban non-ownership as a creative disturbance.
An eye and an ear to deviations, divergence and that you me see as important undercurants should inform our studio and enter the blog.
When the studio is going to explore change as opposed to limitless growth this joint blog for you students, us teachers and invited guests can bee conceived as a library, a library of change. This library of change is then formed by the participants and will act as a common Idea Universe, with a reference too the mosaic reading.
So the moral of this blog is to launch your findings here. The expression visualising change can be fine to have in mind. We look forward to meet you on the blog and in Bergen.

Forever yours
Kjerstin and Knut Eirik
