Case study: the bricks of urban life

1. The basic unit

This 9-second high speed footage corresponds to a shop across the street from aaa's project in Eastern Paris. As we can see, shops are multifunctional places in many cultures: they serve as business and income source for one or two families, while at the same time being the place where friends and strangers alike meet.

Here, the youths can meet their peers; the lady of the family can meet other housewives and discuss community issues, or the old men can sit in front of the shop and play a game of backgammon or chess.

A good share of urban life takes places in the vecinity of the shop. Shops are often businesses, but also they are reasons for people to see other people, and to be seen by others. There was a café just in the corner in front of where this video was taken, and several of us visited this café, which in turn served as a scenario for the locals to ask us where we came from, what we were doing there, etc., and for us to inquire about the local life.

Hence, different shops conform commercial (and unquestionably cultural) the threads that constitute the fabric of social life in communities across the world.

2. More than the sum of its parts

In many cultures around the world, shops of different character size and character come together. This situation takes different names around the world: "tianguis" in Mexico, "bazaar" in countries of muslim tradition, etc. While each variety has its distinctive characteristic, I would like to point out that they all tend to stage a very rich urban life. Tianguis tend to be highly self-organized, and the people that live and work in them often tend to develop stronger social and emotional bonds. In bazaars, for example, one can find anything from food to tin works, and they often occupy several blocks or streets, but they can also travel to other towns and function in open spaces.

The internal organization of these market-like structures tends to be non-linear, and it is actually quite rhyzomatic: a used book shop can stand next to a cartoon artist selling their work. Food products are found easily, but not confined to a specific space.

Besides places for making a living, these market places also stage a great deal of cultural life: the Mercado Central de Guatemala is a good place for finding typical foods such as fiambre or cocido, while in the Bazaar of Tabriz in Iran one can actually find mosques.

3. Useful concepts

Mosaïc-like spatial and activity structure: the more you zoom in, the more details you find. Bazaars and other similar structures are organized like patchwork, where any part can be replaced by any other and movement is fluid in all directions.

Self-organization: trusting people is basic in any kind of group effort. Only when people feel trusted to do their best, will they perform at their prime. These kind of social structures are self-organizing, and while at first it may seem like they live in anarchy, it's what people don't see, that makes the whole organization work finely tuned.

Versatility: new functions can be adapted to the spaces, according to what's necessary. During harvest season it's possible to find more vegetables, while during the wintertime other situations take place. Additionally, every person is entitled to their share of the space, rendering the concept a very inclusive one (this point is strongly related to the mosaïc structure, mentioned before). Hence, the space can adapt to each and every person, and every person can adapt to the space.

Multifunctionalism: it is a place for commerce. It is a place for culture. It is a place for social life. It is a place for...

Background:

Working with RG as a place
where East meets West, and space in between is seen like a

danger zone after 6p.m. something tells you about the location.
There are many spatial and social voids in RG which can

bee seen as a potentional to create a new story as planner

or architect. But how much space do you need to show

your identity? Restourantes, pubs, garffiti walls, skate
boarders and youth activities are not visible on streets of RG...

So the vulnerability can be aspace, spatial zone, an area
where one or more are having a sense of belonging.
It can be a wall or a roof to stand under.

Promotion:
Is all promotion good promotion?

There is media created branding of RG
showing negative associations attached to the places like

RG. So all PR may not be good PR. In that case my

methode is to ask following question; if dominant

phenomena in RG is bad reputation, or should

I see the RG as suburban space with
possibilities to overcome its negative image?

I choose to provide a methode
that are focusing on good promotion/branding and new

activities in RG to generate my approaches.

Path - a way of understanding the life:

Connecting activities...

RG is a place where manydifferent cultures and backgrounds

meet. So one can say that many paths meet at
the same place. This can further be connected to the RG,

where existing infrastructure is used in new ways.
The entire area is connected by
many pedestrian paths or places you can walk through.

Some have existing programs, while others are emerging as

voids. The path brings a variety of landscape and can give

artistic experiences relating to different activities. Different

landscapes, existing or artificially created, offer changing
atmospheres as visitors walk along the path.

"The site"
A place where culture and leisure
activities are dominant - a site that - as it will be

surrounded by existing urban structure - will generate

new activities and actions. It is existing quality in RG,

which I am aim to preserve and strengthen in the project.

Definition of activities:
Some of the activities work more
like social networks, where users make their own space by

participating through activities.

Definition of program:

1. The path; searching attractors,
going through RG showing different qualities and adding new
public spaces, crossing residential area, creating new green

structures...

2. Indoor activities: focusing on my
social program which I found during my investigation in

Loddefjord/Bergen.

3. Outdoor activities: the outdoor activities
are located between RG center and colonial gardens in the south.

The plan is to generate new program with existing activities.

The rising of density is not always problem, but maybe a chance to raise the quality in culture & action’s layer.
Density could be present in two aspects
1. Density of statistics ( density of bikes’ amount & density of using)
2. Density of space quality, cultures and actions.

The bicycle system takes a lot of city space. That means there is no more urban space to build new lanes or parking place for bicycles, but also shows the potential.
The bicycle system in Malmö can be developed as a diversity space ecosystem which could offer more opportunities for different activities and dynamic of small cultures with the density of functions.

My hypothesis is that by introducing programs to educte and advocate for a garden revolution in Rosengård it will be possible to deal with the problem of parallell societies, domestic temporality and the identity of education -all of them key issues that I discovered through reading the novel of Mustafa Can in #2 Imbedded Information.

The knowledge and need for food production is a universal concept and therefore well suitable for the situation in Rosengård which has been mentioned as dispersed and diverse.

Knowledge about gardening and food production is one of many hidden competences who has traveled a long way to Rosengård. According to the discussion of today and to my point of departure a revelation of this rhizom of knowledges could be something that Rosengård could take advantage of to stand out as something different in a positive way.

I have many desires for Rosengård, and I believe that facilitating a garden program with suitable programs and their physical manifestation will introduce an energy dealing with many of these.

When I presented the task "Pionts of Departure" after returning from Paris I was on a track where exchange of knowledge -the hidden competences, and facilitating a structure fore that to happen was the main concern.

After the two weeks with crosscourse and DAV I realized that there was much potential left to discover in the forestgardening of Rosengård.

My attitude towards the project at this moment is to pursue the consequences of making Rosengård the starting point of a new Garden Movement.

My investigation is in the boarderline between Møllevången and Rosengård. The distance between Møllevångstorget and the center of Rosengård is only 2000 meters but it might as well be two different cities. The two areas have significally different appearences in all the statics, while the first is a striving multicultural and thriving place one wants to be a part of, the latter is a desolated island full of unused potential.
The areas are seperated from each other by the railroad track cutting through the landscape and the industrialarea of Sofielund.
This area is a mysterious wonderlandscape, a place for secret meetings, industrial production and it may contain the last traces of Malmøs darkside, an unregulated place for all types of business. Im analyzing the areas and trying to find a interconection for these neglected areas, a way to open up these areas and let them become a part of the city in theyre own way.

Does she speak Arabic?
This question is related to my reaction when you presented us to one of your young colleges, working with the migrant communities in Malmö.
And I asked; does she speak Arabic? A question you said you have thought a lot about afterwords. In a lecture at Harvard this spring an Indian researcher said that the global quality of a city is to be measured on how she (the city) treats the migrant. Our students have been exploring Malmö and done discoveries in this field, they have visited Paris and done comparative studies and observations. I asked one of our students to enter into this question to you, and she wrote (before we travelled to Paris):

I see the numbers, where are the facts?
Visiting Malmö through the internet, I got to know that people from 171 different nations live in the city. These people represent almost 40 % of all ”malmöers”. Getting to know Malmö by diving in to the world of statistics, I understand that ”new malmöers” are representing 12 - 60 % of the population in every township. At least 38 nations are represented in each township by more than 10 persons. Centrum got inhabitants from 94 different nations. The nation that is biggest represented in one township, is Irak with 2881 persons.
Encircling the city of Malmö and being a visitor that see all the different townships by foot, by cycle, by buss, I find expressions of different social layers, different life situations and different ways of living. But, I can’t see, and I cant stop wondering, where does the diversity, richness and potential of all the new malmöers come to expression?
By using Knut Eiriks formulation “ Does she speak Arabic?”, I wonder...
”Where is her cultural treasure expressed?”
”How is her cultural treasure expressed?”
”When is her cultural treasure expressed?”

So our dear friend Christer; Can you elaborate on your thinking, your planning strategies, your innovations end explorations into the migrant, the stranger, as a force in
the appearing Malmö?

Christer Larsson answers
It is a tricky question and can´t been answered so precise, I mean we have a lot of positive effects from foreign cultures in Malmö. A lot of new restaurants, a lot of new shops etc, many of the small shops has been closed if not immigrants decided to run it. We also have a lot of cultural events and I also believe that the Malmöer have been much more open minded than before.
We have a big challenge in our comprehensive planning, one idea is to engage all the citizens in the process so how is that possible, one way is to reach the younger people through f ex new media. We know that there is a lot of thing going on in music and media and will try to find and engage them. Malmö has also been famous fore the rap-music f ex Timbuktu.
Integration is really a difficult issue and the key question is the labor market, it so essential that all people will have the opportunity to have a daily work to be integrated and learn the language.
I also believe that it is a long process of hard work in many issues at the same time and it´s not easy. My goal is that Malmö should be a multicultural and cosmopolitical city in a positive way, we will see. One way is to combine special planning and social economy, f ex to work with connections engagement and dialogue in our Dialogue-PM, you can see this PMs on our web.
We mustn´t forget that our welfare was created by immigrants during the 60ths were we had a lack of workers in Europe´s industry and needed to import Italians, Yugoslavs etc, don’t forget that.
I also suggest that you goes to Möllevångstorget next time, it is an exciting square with a lot of commerce.

#7 / charging the landscape with new energy

The new energy is first and foremost your own research and discoveries, and positively you can read them together as systems of informational exchange (G. Bateson). What you do in your projects is in fact to charge the landscape. Ask yourselves; "What is my discovery?" How can a new interpretation of the landscape penetrate the linear understanding of development? How can resistance be transformed into an offensive, as a necessary deviational act. As we discussed related to the offensive and creative understanding of vulnerability? How do you prepare the landscape for future potential impacts, how do you open for new types of dynamics? Adaptation to climate change has obvious become a key challenge of this image at large (The COP 15 is very soon taking place in Copenhagen). A quotation from Mathias et al, introducing a contrary logic, can underline this charging of Malmö with new energy: "Through a series of evocative actions the hidden qualitative layers of the site is examined. In this way the monoprogramatic appearance of the site is questioned".
And to end this charger with Borges: "Almost immediately, reality collapsed at several points - the truth is that it wanted to give way ".

I have been studying Rosengård and its interaction with Malmö, and to some degree, the rest of the world. So far, I have found a perception wall that affects how people perceive Rosengård. A vast majority of the people I have talked to, don't want to arrive in Rosengård, and those who live there, want to move out. It is not a place for arrival. As a next step for my research, I would like to introduce the concept of the Urban-life corridor.

The urban-life corridor is based on the wildlife corridor. Here's a wildlife corridor definition from Wikipedia:

"A wildlife corridor or green corridor is an area of habitat connecting (...) populations separated by human activities (...) This allows an exchange of individuals between populations..."

Therefore, according to an old diagram I made some weeks ago, I will try to establish such a corridor between inside and outside (the currently separated populations) of Rosengård.

3., 4. & 5.
I provide my own definition for the Urban-life corridor, which takes as an important element the results of the encounter of these previously separated geographical areas. I found several areas with the potential to serve as corridors.
I divided these areas into 5 categories, according to its characteristics:

- Rosengård Center, which holds commerce, services and administration.
- Roads: streets and highways connecting and dividing Rosengård.
- Sports areas: they hold a great potential, offering residents a healthy way of entertainment and interaction with neighboring communities.
- Parks: they offer a free, democratic space, which can be used and transformed in endless ways.
- Religious space: it consists mainly of 2 areas, the graveyard in the North and the Mosque in the South.

I found this space to be ideal for my project. Many roads cross here (pedestrian and vehicles), and it connects the mosque with RoCen through open spaces. Since it comes across the main road and has the potential of connecting Rosengård with other populations, it complies with the criteria to be an Urban-life corridor.

7. & 8.
A functional experiment: drawing from Doina Petrescu's text, I want to explore the possibility of introducing new functions to an old space with the intentions of causing new, unexpected consequences.

What new functions? People in Rosengård have a number of assets brought from their homelands: cooking, traditions, skills, and a large etcétera. Hence, this Urban-life corridor can serve as a stage for these activities, and many more.

About Möllevången

The most colorful district inMalmö. The market trade is lively here and the shops and restaurants have roots all over the world. Möllevångenwas the first planned, large-scale working class neighborhood in Malmö and the result of the growing industrial city in the late 19th century. The labor movement gained tremendous influence here. The worker's newspaper Arbetet and the cooperative association Solidar were founded in Möllevången, which was also the site of the firstFolketsPark ("Community Park") in Sweden.

The best neighborhood of Malmö- Möllevången, or short as "Möllan". It's packed with markets, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, and is arguably the most integrated and multicultural inner city neighborhood in all of Scandinavia.

Möllevångstorget is the plaza as the heart of this living area, and therefore people use the public open space in a beneficial way and give the same space more elasticity. In the morning, the plaza plays a role as an open market, and afterward it becomes a common place of the community.

Malmö Folkets Park is the entertainment park has plenty for all the family. There is a fairground, Northern Europe’s biggest Ferris wheel, a reptile centre, a miniature farm, children’s theatre and entertainment.

District Context

Möllevången is a high density district, and therefore peoplehave so few open space for public use. Besides “MalmöFolkets Park”, there are several points of public green lands distribute in the north and the south of Möllevången.

There are just two public squares for people using, “Möllevångstorget” is located in the beginning of the main street as the heart of this district. Most restaurants, clubs…etc, are opened around “Möllevångstorget”.

The Project Program

Purpose: Do Möllevången attractive !

Action: Promote & structure the local image.

Divisions:

The Edge -To clear the edge of Möllevången, and therefore to promote the clear-cut area.
The Corner - Intend to make a clear invitation by rethinking the image of each corner.
Main Street - Rethink people’s activities and the main commercial behavior here, and therefore to fit in with the theme of the main street.
Green Land - Enhance the green land to invite people using, promote family entertainment and enjoy sunbath in the summer.

The Plans - Do Möllevången attractive !

The Pattern Plan - By using different materials, colors…etc to give new meaning of local image, and therefore inspire people to come.
The Facade Plan - By cleaning, improving, or adding on buildings’ façade to give new dialogue between each living unit.
The Lighting Plan - By lighting plan to give Möllevången different looking from day and night. Make Möllevången has more attractive.
The Plants Plan - By lighting plan to give Möllevången different looking from day and night. Make Möllevången has more attractive.
The Sustainability Plan - By using sub-energy to create multi-using of resource. Besides, people can save more money in facility maintaining cost.
The Traffic Control Plan - By controlling the traffic, it can provide pedestrianzed streets in the inner Möllevången in the night time, and therefore give people relaxed and more comfortable walking space.
The Image Promotion - By using the meaningful colors, icons, diagram, or slogan to express the new Möllevången’s image inspire new invitation. Besides, promote the hotdog shops, hamburger stores to provide restaurant service.

Xerox- A tool for communication, on Møllevangen, a place for sales and meetings in the city, a dazzling, vibrant place full of ephemeral information and cultural activities. Our interpretation of Møllevangen as an area was a place for cultural exchange, a multilayered area were different cultures could intermingle and exist side by side, how to strenghten this…
An area of juxtaposition, no matter where you come from in the city youre allowed to enter and participate and after spending quite some time there and observing the movements, our eyes frozed on the information column. In the square, an old, battered information column was full of posters, both political and cultural, we observed within an hour approxemitly a dozen people walking up to it, pasting different flyers about different happenings not only in Møllevangen but also in the greater Malmø area, including Copenhagen. This trigged our interest for cultural exchange, how to use this element as a creation for a rhizomatic spreading of information. Something uncontrollable, something that was made by the people, for the people. Our idea grew on us and we started to flirt with the idea of a Xerox machine for copying these flyers. By strenghtening the allready existing column and by adding a Xerox, was it possible to establish an autonomnus place for gathering the information, copy it and then spread and display it? Let people come from all over the city to this exact point, do theire business and then again let them walk of in every direction as they please, this is our story…

We arrived in Rosengård in mid September. We heard it’s a sketchy place where no one should go at night, where there are bombs and guns… in short, “a failed experiment in multiculturalism”
(as stated in http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/556299.aspx).
One cloudy morning, we decided to meet in Rosengård. Mo, Teng and Roberto were staying about 2km away from the center of Rosengård, so we decided to walk and approach the place on foot. Four or five hours later, we left Rosengård.
This DAV project intends to show what we found to be the great potential of visiting and walking in Rosengård: the possible outcome of the mixture of Swedish culture and the cultures of the many immigrants.
We want to show what could be an original Rosengård experience.

Architecture and planning interacts with a wide range of disciplines. As an architect you need to get an overlook, an understanding of the dynamics in fields far outside our own discipline. How to get there? We already, by keeping updated on the news, know too much about climate change, injustice, financial crisis, poverty and wars to be touched by it. Only rarely something floats up, an image, a story, and moves us. We know too much and it does not exist. But in the undercurrent of this flow of information it is possible to find people, experts on their field, researchers, humanitarian workers and artists that lend their eyes and voice to for us invisible people. You have all done discoveries on the web, and we have shared with you our findings through the tests we have introduced. These observations and findings can bring the dynamics of wast theoretical fields and actions within range, opening up for a possible cartography of vulnerability – a discovery.

The walk as a method and an artistic practice

How do we approach a space? How do we make research of a specific place in the best way? What kind of impressions and experiences create the sense and the character of a certain place? How do we physically experience places? How do our own body, experience and personality influence our experiences of the new places that we explore?

With this workshop we aimed to make a research on Malmö as a city through the walk and the walk’s forms and methods. The students have been working together in teams where they together have been given an area of research and chosen a theme for their research. As a starting point they have uses the area of research on a walk and represent it in their own chosen format.

By this workshop the students have tried out their ideas and tested them on reality by using the walk and thereby choosing an optic to see the city through. Here you can see the different results of the groups works.

Background knowledge

By the beginning of modernity and the rise of the cities a new term was made for a specific group of men that walked or strolled around in the city. They were given the name ‘flaneur’. A person with a certain self-consciousness who had time and peace to just walk around and watch the life of the city and the ever changing character of the city – and thereby stood out of the mass but at the same time was the quintessence of the city. The perfect flaneur combined empathy and distance. Often the persons were writers or artists who would depict their experiences in text and pictures. The movement is the essence for the flaneur and his strolling through the city in contrast to the life of the city that he moves through that constantly haste by him. This gives him the possibility to voyeur the city but also to take it in on his own conditions.

Concurrently with the rise of the city sociologists, theorists, artists, urban scientists and city-planners have found a profound interest and core research material in the space of the city and the changes as well as the urban population way of taking over the space of the city. Important to mention is the French theorist Michel de Certeaus thoughts in his book ‘The Practice of Everyday Life’ where he analyses how people as individual has a need to create his or her own rolls and rituals in a mass-society such as the city. So when the citizen goes against the planned paths in the parks and makes her own ruts by walking across the lawn she takes in the place in her own way and creates her own rules.

Today many artists still use the walk as a method and an approach for an artistic practise. Here plays the artists personality an important roll for the outcome of the artwork. This becomes clear in the choice of frame or thematic the artist wishes to present. One of the most important and contemporary artists using the walk, as a method is the Mexican based artist Francis Alÿs. He has been doing his city walks in a lot of cities such as London, Mexico City, Jerusalem, Copenhagen, Berlin and Lima – just to mention a few. Before doing his work he first walks the city where he research for the character and the special sphere of the city. Then he sets a certain complex of problem in play of that specific place and often combined with an existential and self-referring approach. As for instance his walk through Mexico City where he pushed a big ice cube, which due to the high temperature quickly became smaller and smaller. This doing for no reasons points at mankind’s ever lasting wondering around with no goal. The walks of Francis Alÿs are afterwards turned into videos, photos, drawing and paintings.

A Sunny Day at Fredriksberg

The project Sunny Day at Fredriksberg is the result of the workshop with the artist group Publik from Copenhagen.

We have chosen to present our project in the interlinked medias Google Maps and Wikipedia. This way, our project both exists, is documented and archived at the same time, and is open for response from anyone coming across it. It is public in essence.

Through a series of evocative actions, we examine the hidden qualitative layers of the traffic junction in Fredriksberg, Malmö. The mono-programmatic appearance of the site is questioned by occupying it with everyday activity unfamiliar to it. The actions, documented in photos and film, form a loose narrative of a day trip to the site and are to be found in Google maps and Youtube.

The material will appear in Google maps in a few days time due to a delay in the system. We will then remind you to browse the photos there.

Now is the time to guide yourself towards interesting positions in the Malmö mind field.
You have been deep into the chosen themes and assignments, and you have done discoveries on journeys in the net and by slow walks through two cities. You have seen two large exhibitions on how the architectural community reacts to questions asked in different scales and on different topics. You have been visiting dynamic small cultures on the web and in backyards of Paris and Malmö. Constantin from AAA (in the garden of Paris) and the small text “loosing control, keeping desire” introduced the notion becoming for us. In our interpretation it reads as a very beautiful notion related to what your concepts can actually open for.
Related to all the information on every level that we now have on Malmö, we think it is important that you guide yourself (with our kind assistance), smart and daring into a position that relates to what is in the making, what is becoming, to what deserves a breakthrough.
It is your own discoveries that you have to nourish. Repeat to yourself what informs your project and try hard to establish your own position. This position must be a real desire on your behalf to carve out, or farm out, so to speak. This also goes for your deeper study in the chosen sites. Be aware of what has impressed and informed you in the larger scale, and relate to all your discoveries when encircling the new urban legend and codex – on site.
You don’t have to solve everything on the site – but you do have to “hit the right dynamics with traces to follow” as we stated in Imbedded Information. Ask yourself what you introduces on site, in time, and what this may open for.
You have worked individually in the studio, and that implies that the studio has 19 possible new openings to an understanding of the appearing Malmö.

Your work can be conceptualized and concreticised in many ways. But there should always be an interesting line between your research, your concept and back again to new research.
Our total library that partly is on the City as Biotope blog is in this way and open field of exploration for you all. The same is all the texts you have had as guidelines and discoveries from teachers and in found papers and guest texts. If you re-read this documents now, after your journeys we think you will make some new discoveries.

Historical summary of the environmental consciousness.

Our modern civilization is shaken to its foundations, which manifests itself in a jumble of crisis symptoms. UN and national political institutions are deeply involved in the mobilization of technological solutions to overcome the crisis symptoms. Following the Rio Conference in 1992 and the Kyoto Agreement in 1997 are planned, as a necessary follow-up, a global climate conference in Copenhagen in 2009.

In june 2009 a new environmental policy for the City of Malmö was ready:

It says:
“ - The city of Malmö will require environmental and social considerations into procurement in different areas. - Claims in respect of environmental and social concerns should be formulated taking into account legal requirements and with respect for small and medium-sized enterprises to participate in the procurements. - The environmental requirements to ensure sustainable development and in particular aim to achieve the objectives of Malmö's environmental programs and commitments made in accordance with the certification of Malmo as Fairtrade City. - The procurement will also be designed to both smaller and larger companies have the opportunity to submit bids and participate in the competition. - Environmental requirements in procurement should be based on among other things, the existing EU directives, Swedish law. - All suppliers must be treated equally and given the same opportunities for information. Procurement opportunities through e-commerce should be considered and, where appropriate, utilized”.

Regarding the proposed comprehensive strategies for the regional plan, it is more unclear where Green architecture comes into play. We can see a lack of concrete tools and concepts to look constructively at the green, as a driving force in urban development. Therefore, this architecture study will give examples of several different approaches aimed at enhancing the integration of the city's various components. A central concept of this approach, focusing on urban development and sustainability, is the potential. The concept can open up to new ideas and development directions that create value rather than merely preserve. This is also a pragmatic approach when many natural and cultural values of the regional green structure is heavily dependent on human activities. Formulating green structure possibilities in this way means that new concepts will be a key when urban development and green architecture are discussed.

A useful concept for a new integrated approach to landscape, urbanism and green structure is the potential. It can describe a landscape of change, and the real potential, and can be applied to many of the landscape dimensions: economic, social, health and ecological. A landscape or a place can be described as a "rose" showing the dimensions of potential. A landscape, a park or a green structure can be well developed in social and economic aspects, but less in others because there is limited potential. The Potential four aspects can of course be examined carefully by studying the factors that build up different potentials. The different aspects are not distinct but often overlapping and mutually dependent. This new approach allows to formulate entirely new kind of strategies for landscape, urbanism and green structure.

Italo Calvino quotes the Italian poet Leopardi (1798-1837) in his book The Six Memos for the Next Millennium, in his lecture on exactitude. The quote examplifies the meticulous attention to and definition of details when trying to describe vagueness, indefiniteness and abstraction.

The streets of Paris swallowed me with their rhythm, crazily intense at some points and loose in others. I walked for hours, even seemingly on the same street, which would go through several transformations during the travel. The amount of life occuring on the streets and the speed of impressions filling my senses resulted in an overwhelmed overall experience rather than a calm observation.

I used drawing as breathing between long sentences of walking. The intimacy of details and small, close observations both opposes and fulfills the ungraspable scale and contents of the city.

Despite the qualities the inhabitans of countryside (the eco village near Oxie) have, regarding amount of space and green areas, they dont use the potential. This waste is in future mathers a dying dinosaur, or it should be.

Mother earth are whispering symptoms of sickness in our ears. Reconnecting land and people as a metaphor challenges authorities and the attitude of man to be aware of consequences by not change the way of living.

The need of sustainable solutions reaches beyond solar panels and foodforests. A sustainable developement of society is a complex point of departure into another rhisomatic system. A piece of this system could be a further look at the term mixed use. My focus will contain the attitude that densifying and expansion of Malmö is a truth for the future. In this mather the open gaps (no.1) are necesseraly threatened by developement. Progressive interventions and mixed use as focus will be my exercise.

1. The situation to day. Mono use and

a surface with very few functions.

2. Mapping the obvious - antielasticity of space.

3. The process will grow from initiatives, probably

from bottom and up (example of AAA in Paris).

4. The focus area are huge. My gap is no longer

a smal issue - but concerning the whole society -

Rethinking about public squares in the old town area of Malmö

The old town area is the heart of Malmö City, and such as this high density area just has few public squares now. These less space services people come from not only all Malmö but also other cities like Copenhagen, etc. It’s hard to make a clear definition between the public and the private space here!

Besides, users often make the demand beyond the planning, and then make new order by themselves.

My concept for “points of departure” is to rethink about public squares in the old town area of Malmö City. To study about what is the demand for these public squares.

Rosengård has triggered me with its apparently lacking plateu of bridging contact/understanding/tolerance/interest to the rest of Malmö. Bridging/building this plateu is subject of interest under the City of Biotope umbrella.

I have already introduced the Forestgarden to Rosengård, and I will keep this concept as prior to to the Point of Departure. As the dynamics within an ecosystem such as a Forest Garden work, I want to increase the capacity of social end environmental carachter in Rosengård by strengthening the interaction between the inhabitants. This cooperation includes the relationships between the people, buildings and environment. Competence and qualification is the nutrience that flows in this system.

On a global basis, the energy that we spend today is equvivalent to 22 billion slaves working around the clock. A Forestgarden has the obvious effects of regaining the balance og local ecosystems, but there are multiple determinations putting weight to the load of a Forest Garden.
